Rey Fire Temple, also known as Bahram and Mil Hill fire temple is a historical monument left from Sassanid dynasty. This temple is situated on Mill Hill in the southeast of Shah-Abdol-Azim shrine and in the southern part of “Qaleh Now” District in ancient city of Ray. It is believed that this structure might have been Bahram V’s fire temple. This old monument is the remnant of one of the most important pre-Islamic fire temples where the sacred fire was kept. It’s said that, after Battle of Jalula (the battle between Sassanid Empire and Rashidun Caliphate), Yazdegerd III took the sacred fire from Bahram Temple to Merv. Some parts of this structure were destroyed during invasion of Alexander to Iran, and only some parts of this beautiful Chahartaq (four arches) have remained. The sacred fire used to be kept under the smallest arch and people prayed in front of it. There are three small corridors under the ground that extend across the temple. Besides, picture of fish has been curved above every one of these corridors and now, one of them is kept in National Museum of Iran, the second one in the fire temple and the third one is in Cultural and Tourism Organization of Iran. Mil Hill fire temple has been constructed with rock, Sarooj, mud and brick. The temple was registered as a national heritage in 1956.
